Update: 2 arrested after shots fired in grocery parking lot

April 19. [UPDATED 9:45 am April 20] Cornelius Police have released the names of two individuals involved in an altercation in the parking lot of the downtown Cornelius Food Lion on Monday. Multiple rounds were fired, but no one was injured.

The names are: Stephen Wayne Bloodworth, 18, and James Arness Withers, 62.

Cornelius Police proceeded at a high speed from downtown westward at around 5:20 pm toward the QuikTrip on Burton Lane. The suspects were arrested at the end of Burton.

It all took place late Monday afternoon as a peaceful march from Union Bethel AME Zion to Town Hall was getting under way.

On Monday, April 18 2022 at 1723 hours, officers responded to a person with a weapon call for service at Food Lion, located at 20125 North Main Street in Cornelius. Witnesses on scene stated that two known subjects fired multiple rounds in the parking lot before leaving the area in a 2014 Chrysler 200 displaying North Carolina registration JAJ8635 (VIN: 1C3CCBBB0DN765785). The vehicle was located near the end of Burton Lane. Both known suspects were taken into custody. Both were charged with going armed to the terror of the public and one was charged with carrying a concealed gun.
