New noise ordinance comes before Town Board tonight

Jan. 18. By Dave Vieser. Cornelius commissioners will be asked to ratify modifications to noise ordinances at tonight’s Town Board meeting. The changes would bring the town into line with limits used statewide, according to Deputy Town Manager Wayne Herron.

“By matching everyone else, it sets a standard that has been deemed acceptable by the courts and puts us in uniformity with the remainder of the State.”

The recommended change would lower the accepted noise level from 90 to 85 decibels during normal business hours 10 am to 9 pm Sunday throughThursday and 10 am to 11 pm Friday and Saturday, as well as 75 to 60 decibels in the overnight hours.

Background

The noise issue has been primarily related to live music performed outdoors at BoatYard Lake Norman on Hwy. 21. A number of complaints have been leveled by neighbors over the past several years about loud music.

BoatYard will perform approximately $18,000 worth of work to adjust the bass to limit neighborhood impacts.

The Town Board Meeting will begin at 6pm in Town Hall on Catawba Avenue. It will also be streamed on www.cornelius.org, link to “watch meetings online.”
