COVID-19 update Sept. 1

Sept. 1. By Dave Yochum. The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services today reported 7,248 new cases of the coronavirus statewide, up from 4,569 new cases yesterday.

There were 61 new deaths statewide, but none in Mecklenburg County

Hospitalizations

The steady increase in hospitalizations may be back after a couple of days of moderation. The NCDHHS reports 3,757 people hospitalized due to COVID-19, the highest number since the peak—more than 3,900— back in mid-January.

Testing

Positive tests fell to 13.8 percent statewide. It was over 14 percent three days in the past 10 days.

Vaccinations

Sixty-one percent of North Carolina adults are now vaccinated. Last week, 6 million Americans got a shot—the biggest weekly total since July 5. The US is now averaging almost 900,000 shots each day—up 80 percent from the 500,000 shot average in mid-July.

Mecklenburg

In Mecklenburg County, there were 561 new cases from Tuesday to today. The county-wide positive test rate was 13.2 percent in today’s report.

North Mecklenburg (change from Tuesday)

Cornelius: 20 new cases, 3,486 cumulative total, 26 deaths total.

Davidson: 12 new cases, 2,046 cumulative total, 15 deaths total.

Huntersville: 30 new cases, 7,537 cumulative total, 58 deaths total.
