COVID-19 state, local update Aug. 31

Aug. 31. The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services’ COVID report shows 5,351 new cases of the coronavirus statewide, up from 4,569 new cases yesterday but down from more than 8,000 new daily cases on Thursday and Friday last week.

There were 56 new deaths statewide due to COVID. The NCDHHS reclassified a death we reported Monday in Huntersville as not being related to the coronavirus.

Total COVID hospitalizations are at 3,612 statewide, up from 3,509 yesterday.

Novant stats

—21 percent of Novant Health’s coronavirus patients are in ICUs

—15 percent to 18 percent of their COVID patients are on ventilators.

—Novant says the average age of those hospitalized with COVID is 49 years old.

—91 percent are unvaccinated. Fewer have co-morbidities than in the past.

Testing

Positive tests rose to 14.6 percent statewide.

Mecklenburg

In Mecklenburg County, there were 509 new cases from Monday to today, and six new COVID-related deaths. The county-wide positive test rate remained at 13.1 percent.

North Mecklenburg (change from Monday)

Cornelius: 11 new cases, 3,466 cumulative total, 26 deaths total.

Davidson: 6 new cases, 2,034 cumulative total, 15 deaths total.

Huntersville: 32 new cases, 7,507 cumulative total, 58 deaths total.
