June 19. Will Mayor Chuck Travis run unopposed for re-election this fall? It’s increasingly looking that way, but anything can happen in the next couple of weeks. Filing for the November elections opens July 6, and closes July 17. Cost to file: $12.
Travis has hired political consultant Lawrence Shaheen of Carolina Political Consulting. He managed the successful campaigns of former Mayor Jeff Tarte when he ran for NC Senate and former Commissioner John Bradford when he ran for NC House of Representatives.
Kurt Naas, a Cornelius resident who is the founder of the WidenI-77.org anti-toll group, says he is not running. Nor have candidates emerged from the Exit 28 Ridiculousness Facebook page, which has almost 4,000 members.
Travis will launch his campaign for re-election at the Oak Street Mill in downtown Cornelius June 26. Hosts of the event include US Sen. Thom Tillis, Tarte, former Mayor Gary Knox, Bradford, NC Rep. Charles Jeter and former County Commissioner Karen Bentley, as well as Woody Washam, the highest vote-getter in the 2013 race for a seat on the Town Board.
Cornelius Mayor Pro-Tem Woody Washam said he will file with the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections to seek re-election to the Cornelius Town Board.
Two men from the west side of Cornelius, one an insurance executive, the other a doctor who came in sixth in 2013 and just missed landing a seat on the commission, say they will run for a seat on the five-member Town Board.
Denis Bilodeau, president of Aquesta Insurance Services, is the newest face. He announced his candidacy at a reception April 9.
Dr. Michael Miltich, who lost two years ago, but was considered to fill a fifth seat vacated by former Commissioner John Bradford when he was elected to the NC House of Representatives, also plans to run.
All four sitting commissioners, in addition to Washam, are expected to run as well.
