June 17. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Class of 2020 was offered scholarships totaling $153.8 million, with students from Hough High accounting for nearly $14 million, the second-highest total in the district.
Hough grads are way up from 2016 when they were offered $9.5 million in scholarships. Back then, Providence High seniors were offered $17.885 million in scholarships, the top-performing school at the time.
In all, the 2020 graduates were offered 3,380 scholarships. The scholarship money offered to CMS students is an increase over the past two years, $6 million more than the class of 2019’s $147.7 million.
The highest total was reported by Mallard Creek High, with $15.1 million. South Mecklenburg High came in third, with $12.8 million.
Of the 2020 total, nearly $131 million represented academic scholarships. Athletic scholarships totaled $23 million.
CMS says the scholarship offers are an important indicator of district success because they show that their graduates are attractive to colleges and universities.
