CURRIE
Ann Lucas Douthit Currie, of Davidson, passed away Monday May 4 at the age of 91. She was born in Washington, NC in 1924 and was the daughter of the late Winifred Nicholson and Jacob Benton Douthit. Due to the early deaths of her parents, she was reared by her aunt and uncle Lucille Nicholson and Henry Clay Carter. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Robert Arrowood Currie, and by her brothers and sisters.
Left to cherish her memories are daughter Winifred Currie Ballenger and her husband Jackson of Roanoke, VA; her son Robert Arrowood Currie, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Charlotte; granddaughters Ann Ballenger Schweppe and her husband Mark of Winston-Salem; Currie Ballenger Whalen and her husband Andrew of Chesapeake, VA; Logan Henderson Currie of Singapore, and Margaret Alston Currie of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Jackson Baker and Ann Lucas Schweppe of Winston-Salem, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and sister-in-law.
Growing up on the Pamlico River imbued Ann with a love of water and the ocean, a rich drawl and a fun-loving Eastern North Carolina state of mind. Ann continued a long family tradition at Salem College where she graduated in 1946 as a fifth generation alumna. After graduation, Ann’s spirit of adventure led her to Philadelphia where she met her future husband Bob. In 1957, Ann and Bob moved to Davidson where he served as the Business Manager of Davidson College, they raised a family and were members of Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Ann’s keen wit, astute observations and insights about people were evident when she told stories and wrote an occasional article about things around town for the Mecklenburg Gazette.
Ann’s life was centered on her family and friends. She was a very devoted wife and mother who deeply loved her husband, children, adoring granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Her bridge groups and daily crossword puzzles were also a great joy to her over the years. Always young at heart, Ann had a true affection for children and young people, forming lasting friendships with generations of Davidson College students. Over the decades, her dining room table was a gathering place for fellowship and laughter. We will always cherish her joy for life, the path she walked, her legacy of humor and her abounding love.
We rejoice in Ann’s freedom from infirmity and return to our Lord and loved ones. Her family is grateful to the dedicated and loving caregivers at The Pines at Davidson.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service celebrating 91 years of merriment at 2:00 Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends at the Congregation House following the service.
