April 3. While there is apparently no consensus on closing boat ramps around the lake, it is being discussed. At a press conference today in Mecklenburg County, Health Director Gibbie Harris said closing ramps in one county might cause boaters to tow their watercraft to a ramp in another county.

Social distancing on land and on the lake is considered critical to fight the spread of COVID-19.

Mayor Woody Washam said as the COVID-19 crisis accelerates it is more critical than ever that citizens throughout the region strictly abide by the emergency order.

Duke Energy has canceled all their events through June including the symphony at the Energy Explorium. July events are in jeopardy as well.

‘Serious business’

“The Stay at Home Order is serious business for the health of our town and the protection of all,” Washam said.

The complexities of a stay-at-home order seem to be multiplying by the day. Less than sincere compliance, with some people pushing the gray areas, is threatening the greater population, Harris said.

Sandbars on Lake Norman have been closed. County officials are monitoring and working with other counties regarding boat ramp use during the stay-at-home order.

“Everyone seriously needs to responsibly do their part,” Mayor Washam said.

There are now 600 cases of COVID-19 in Mecklenburg County, with three COVID deaths. There are 250,000 cases nationwide.

“Whether you are anywhere in our town or on the beautiful lake, please abide by the Social Distancing rules,” Washam said.
