18-year-old jailed a month after being charged with crimes

Feb. 9. Eighteen-year-old Brett Kimbrell, who was accused of 10 counts of child pornography before being released to his parents last month, was jailed Friday in lieu of $75,000 bail.

The Charlotte Observer reported that new details about the investigation were revealed during a hearing to change his original nonexistent bond on Friday afternoon. He was taken to jail in handcuffs with a $75,000 secured bond and ordered to stay away from schools, parks, playgrounds and anyone younger than 18.

He was released Saturday.

Cornelius Police Chief David Baucom told Cornelius Today that “as a career law enforcement officer, I believe anyone charged with a felony should be required to post a bond before being released back into their community.”

Cornelius police criticized the Mecklenburg magistrate’s release of Kimbrell one month ago:

“Given the serious nature of these charges, which involve the safety and well-being of children, we find this decision troubling and concerning,” a news release said at the time. “The release of this defendant, especially under such circumstances, undermines the gravity of the situation and raises significant concerns about the risk to public safety, particularly the safety of minors in the community.”
