Aug. 2 Cornelius businesswoman Abigail Jennings has brought her entrepreneurial skills to a new private school for kindergarten and first grade in the historic Croft community on Highway 115. The president of Lake Norman Realty, based on West Catawba Avenue, says the new school will open Aug. 20 in a restored 1890 schoolhouse. The school targets children who were not selected in the lotter system for the Community School of Davidson and Corving Community School, two successful area charter schools. There are 3,500-plus students on their waiting lists, which convinced Jennings, her husband Randolph Lewis and Cheryl and Brian Demers, Erin McDonald and Erik Giles to start Pioneer Springs Community School. In each ensuing year, the founders will add another grade to the school. Cheryl Demers is the director of the school. Lewis will be a music teacher, while Jennings will be finance director. The school is a minimal-tuition private school rooted in the Basic School philosophy of Dr. Ernest Boyer, former president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
