Upcoming Events: February 22 – March 4

The Cornelius Black History Month program is this Saturday at Town Hall. The annual program focuses on the history of families in the Smithville community. This year, the story will revolve around three historically black churches: Torrence Chapel AME Zion, Hunters Chapel United Methodist and Union Bethel AME Zion. The program will celebrate the rich heritage of this community with music, history, spoken word, liturgical dance and memorabilia. Cornelius PARC Department’s summer camp registration opens at 7 a.m. March 1. Spots fill up quickly, so mark your calendars.
Thursday, Feb. 22
Newsmakers Breakfast
Mayors Woody Washam of Cornelius, Rusty Knox of Davidson and John Aneralla of Huntersville will field questions from the audience. Reservations required. 7:30-9 a.m. at The Peninsula Club in Cornelius.
Homeschool Day
“Waste Not, Want Not” day will help students discover how people of yesteryear used and reused everyday materials such as candle wax, fruit peels and corn husks. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Historic Latta Plantation in Huntersville.
Children’s Play
The Mooresville Community Children’s Theatre will perform “The House at Pooh Corner.” Blankets will be collected at each performance. Feb. 22-25 at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville.
Lake Norman Covekeepers
Lenny Lampel, natural resources coordinator with Mecklenburg County, will share his knowledge about the incredible world of insects in and around Lake Norman. 7 p.m. at the East Lincoln Fire Station.
Concert
Grammy winner Dom Flemons, one of the co-founders of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, will perform on a variety of instruments. 7:30 p.m. in Tyler-Tallman Hall at Davidson College.
Art Exhibit
Through large-scale watercolor paintings and sculpture, Jen Ray’s “Surrounded by Wolves” explores female rebellion and the shifting nature of a woman’s identity. Open through March 3 at the Van Every Gallery at Davidson College.
Romare Bearden Exhibit
As part of our Black History Month celebration, Cornelius will exhibit seven amazing works by the late Romare Bearden, on loan from the Jerald Melberg Gallery of Charlotte. Feb. 12-28 at Cornelius Town Hall.
Diary of Anne Frank
Davidson Community Players presents the story of a Jewish family in hiding during the Holocaust. Feb. 15-March 4 at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.
Friday, Feb. 23
The Roommate
It’s “The Odd Couple” meets “Breaking Bad” in this play by Jen Silverman in which empty nester and recent divorcee Sharon begins to rethink her life after her new roommate moves in. Feb. 23-March 10 at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.

The Mountaintop
L. A. Theatre Works presents Katori Hall’s internationally-acclaimed play about the night before Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. 8 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College.
Saturday, Feb. 24
Hike Cornelius
Rescheduled from earlier this month, this leisurely two-mile hike through the park trail system will include Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists’ insights on the natural amenities. 10 a.m. at Robbins Park in Cornelius.
Black History Month Celebration
The Town of Cornelius PARC Department and the Smithville CommUNITY Coalition invite the community for memorabilia, live performances, children’s activities and refreshments. 1-3 p.m. at Cornelius Town Hall.
Argentinian Wine Dinner
Nationally-recognized chef and author Dan Huntley will prepare a traditional feast over hot coals. Featured wine is from Bodega Familia Schroeder. 3-6:30 p.m. at Historic Rural Hill in Huntersville.
Gospel Concert
Adam Beard from Stanley and The Darin and Brooke Aldridge Band from Cherryville will perform at 6 p.m. at Living Word Ministries in Lowesville.
Sunday, Feb. 25
Black History Month Service
The Rev. Dr. Jesse Lee Douglas, Sr., an early leader in the Civil Rights movement who marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will be a guest speaker during the church’s regular Sunday service. 10 a.m. at Torrence Chapel AME Zion Church in Cornelius.
Southern Flair Bridal Affair
Vendors, photo booth, snacks, door prizes. Noon-3 p.m. at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville.
Dramatic Performance
Michael Conner, grandson of John Conner, will perform his self-directed “The Foreshadowing of a People: Reflections From the Past.” The performance will follow a screening of the film “Filling in the Gaps.” 2 p.m. at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.
Concert
The Music at St. Alban’s series welcomes Virginia-based husband and wife duo violinist Matvey Lapin and pianist Katja Lapin. Duo Amabile will perform works by Schubert, Franck, Ravel and Part. 3 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson.
Concert
Caritas Acapella Ensemble will present “Homegrown,” a celebration of works by composers from the Carolinas. Proceeds go to Friendship Gardens. 3-4:30 p.m. at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
Book Talk
Amber Smith, author of “The Last to Let Go,” will join us for a discussion and signing of her book as well as a letter-writing session that ties into the book’s themes. 3 p.m. at Main Street Books in Davidson.

Home Grown Exhibition
