Town board OK’s new buffer rules

Dec. 6. Residents turned out at the Cornelius Town Board meeting Monday night and voiced their opposition to current plans for no left turns at Torrence Chapel Road and West Catawba. However new plans will be presented at the Dec. 19 meeting. It turned out to be a quiet meeting of the Board of Commissioners. They also voted 4-0 to revise rules around buffers alongside existing homeowners.

“Current town regulations propose buffers with plantings that will grow into an opaque buffer upon maturity,” Planning Director Wayne Herron said. “However our Land Development Code Advisory Board felt this was misleading and it would be more appropriate to actually have options that allowed for a real opaque buffer. This revision will address those concerns.” The changes had previously received the unanimous approval of the town planning board and will go into effect immediately.

The board also tabled a vote on a new North Mecklenburg Alliance, a panel that would study, investigate and advocate transportation improvements in the Lake Norman area. The alliance would essentially replace the three town’s previous participation in the Lake Norman Regional Transportation Board.

Mayor Pro Tem Woody Washam, who ran the meeting in the absence of Mayor Chuck Travis, suggested that the matter be held over to a future meeting when all members of the Town Board would be present and available to comment on the proposal. Commissioner Dave Gilroy was also absent.
