Torrence Chapel presentation postponed

Dec. 8. By Dave Vieser. A presentation by DOT consultants to the Cornelius Town Board concerning options for the Torrence Chapel/West Catawba intersection has been postponed. With major changes occurring at the state level, town officials are not sure when the presentation planned for Dec. 19 will be rescheduled.

“After the board meeting on Dec. 5 we were notified that they would not be ready on the 19th,” said Mayor Pro Tem Woody Washam. “One of the reasons is a request from me to include a timing study for timing differences for Torrence Chapel residents to have to travel down Knox Road to access I-77. That is information I had been requesting for weeks.”

The original proposal by the consultants which would have prohibited left turns for Torrence Chapel motorists at the heavily used intersection has drawn an outcry of opposition from residents, as well as several members of the Town Board. Washam said the new presentation has now been delayed by DOT until after the first of the year.

“I am hopeful that they are considering and including the vast amount of input they have received from Torrence Chapel residents as well as town board members,” he said.

As for when the new presentation will be ready, that’s anyone’s guess. With a new administration taking over in Raleigh, there will be potential new changes at DOT.

The town has promised to notify the public when a new date is set, and Cornelius Today will publish the rescheduled date as soon as it is known.
