Catawba reopened after credible bomb situation

UPDATE—There were apparently the makings of a credible bomb in a Mercedes Benz parked in front of the Cornelius Police Station Friday afternoon. The situation began around 1 pm, according to police officers, who at the time thought there could be a bomb the four-door sedan parked opposite Town Hall, which was soon evacuated. A bomb removal device was deployed while the surrounding streets were deserted. Police asked nearby business owners and residents to stay away from their windows. Traffic reopened around 3:35 pm. Police had no further details late this afternoon. RiteAid and Cashion’s were also evacuated. The Town Hall switchboard was still shut down at 3:50 pm.
