May 17. Cornelius Police are looking for a man who pulled a gun on the owner of the HoneyBaked Ham store in the Shops at Fresh Market shopping center Monday. The incident apparently did not happen inside the store.

It all happened around 3:30 pm Monday behind the store, according to the owner who asked that his name not be used because of concerns about his safety. Cornelius Police said they responded to 20609-112 Torrence Chapel Road in reference to an armed robbery.

The suspect is identified as Darryl Lamar Moffett Sr., 52, of Charlotte. Cornelius Police have obtained a warrant for Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Darryl Moffett Sr. is asked to contact the North Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers at 704-896-7867, or the Cornelius Police Department at 704-892-7773 or your local law enforcement agency. You can remain anonymous. According to Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s records, Moffett was arrested in September for assault on a female.

Ironically, the owner of the store played a key role in the arrest of a suspect in an armed robbery at the Carolina Telco Federal Credit Union in January of 2015. He spotted what turned out to be the getaway car parked in back of The Shops at Fresh Market.

Apparently cars very rarely park where the getaway vehicle—a Chrysler Pacifica—was parked. When Cornelius Police were scouring the area after the robbery, he put two and two together and told them about the silver Pacifica.

Detectives later went though security camera footage to help identify the vehicle. The Pacifica was seen near the Lake Norman YMCA, where earlier someone had called in a bomb threat as a diversion.

There was a received $2,500 in reward money from Carolina Telco.
