Jan. 27. How do you get to Lincoln Center in New York City? Go east on Catawba, then south on Main Street, take a quick left on Hickory, cross the railroad tracks, right on Zion and easy as you please you’re at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Campus where Dr. Marcy Mittelstadt is director of the Chancel Choir.

The Mt. Zion Chancel Choir has been invited to participate in the World Premiere performance of composer Pepper Choplin’s “Our Father: A Journey Through the Lord’s Prayer at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall on May 25. Choplin, a nationally known composer and conductor, will lead the performance. The choir will spend five days in New York City preparing for the concert.

“The Mt. Zion United Methodist Chancel Choir received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the exceptional recommendation given by Pepper Choplin. It is quite an honor just to be invited to perform in New York,” said Dr. Jonathan Griffith, artistic director and principal conductor for Distinguished Concerts International New York City.

“We are humbled and honored to be invited by Pepper Choplin to sing under his direction in Lincoln Center. As singers this is like playing in the Super Bowl,” said Mittelstadt.

The choir and chamber orchestra will present the piece in Cornelius June 7 at 3 pm in the sanctuary of Mt. Zion.

Choplin’s compositions incorporate varied styles such as folk, gospel, classical, and jazz. His published work includes 230-plus anthems for church and school choir, 13 church cantatas and a book of piano compositions. His choral music has sold several millioncopies

He made his Carnegie Hall debut in a joint concert with Joseph Martin in 2013.
