Lucky Cat ‘Shop, Sparkle, Spay’ fundraiser Oct. 18

Lake Norman Lucky Cat is hosting a Pawbrokers Jewelry party Oct. 18 at The Pearl event center entitled “Shop, Sparkle, Spay.” The event is free to the public and features beautiful jewelry for sale ranging from antique estate pieces to the latest fashions.  100% of the event’s sales go to the Lake Norman Lucky Cat Program.

The Lake Norman Lucky Cat Program is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to improving the welfare of cats in our community. “Spay/neuter for all cats, whether owned or not, is the first step in addressing the cat overpopulation problem.  Sadly, more than 80 percent of all cats and kittens at shelters are euthanized as there are simply not enough homes for them all,” said Abigail Jennings, president and founder of the program.   The Lake Norman Lucky Cat Program addresses this need through facilitating low-cost spay/neuter for owned cats and also promotes the humane, long-term solution of Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage.

Through TNRM, feral cats are humanely trapped and brought to a veterinarian to be evaluated, spayed or neutered and vaccinated.  While under anesthesia, the cats are eartipped, where a small portion of the left ear is painlessly removed for identification.  After they recover from sterilization surgery, they are returned to their outdoor home with a caretaker providing their ongoing food and care.

Thanks to the support of the Lake Norman community, this year we have spayed/neutered nearly 500 cats in the Lake Norman region.  This has been a record-breaking year for us, and we hope to help even more cats in 2017,” said Robin Byrd, executive director.

Lucky Cat’s annual event is held in conjunction with Alley Cat Allies’ “National Feral Cat Day” to raise funds and awareness of our community’s feral cats.  This year’s National Feral Cat Day theme, “All Cats, All Communities,” is intended to bring attention to the fact that cats are a part of every community.  Cats have lived alongside humans for more than 10,000 years. They are part of the natural landscape. Feral cats, also called community or outdoor cats, are the same species as pet cats, live in groups called colonies, and can thrive in every landscape. They are just as healthy as pet cats, but they are not socialized to humans and are therefore unadoptable.

This year’s event is sponsored by Lake Norman Realty, the Pearl, and Armin’s Catering. Shoppers can enjoy food by Armin’s and special dessert treats by Cake Expressions by Lisa. A specialty cocktail, the “Pawtini” is also being featured at the event with a percentage of proceeds supporting the program too.
