Housing group fundraiser seeks to cover drop in help from outside sources

Housing group fundraiser seeks to cover drop in help from outside sourcesAug 4. Since its founding in 1997 Davidson Housing Coalition (DHC) has assisted hundreds of people attain affordable housing and more stable lives in Davidson and surrounding communities. But, budget cuts from state and national housing funders are threatening to diminish the organization’s capacity to serve. DHC is responding to the situation by conducting its second annual summer fundraising campaign in the month of August and aims to raise $50,000.

DHC Executive Director Marcia Webster said, “The mission of the Davidson Housing Coalition is to work with the larger community to preserve and create affordable housing options and to prepare families and individuals for financial stability and home ownership. We are certain that most Davidson citizens agree with that belief. Our campaign will give them an opportunity to show that in a tangible way.”

Supporters can contribute to the campaign, “Hope Lives Here,” with a direct donation, or by dining at one of several Davidson restaurants that have pledged a portion of proceeds for a designated day to DHC. Those “Hope Served Here” restaurants are: August 5 at Kindred, August 11 at Famous Toastery, August 19at Campania, August 20 at Millstone Bake House, and August 27 at Restaurant X. At the conclusion of the month, DHC will stage an event to celebrate both the success of the campaign and the completion of a new duplex apartment for armed forces veterans.

In addition to providing housing for sale and rent, DHC also offers:

  • Free financial counseling to help people move from financial crisis to financial independence and low-cost homebuyer education to prepare families for home ownership.
  • SHARE Network Access Point (SNAP) to provide clients with job search advice and computer access to online job listings.
  • The Hands Around Mecklenburg/Mooresville Making Emergency Repairs Safely (HAMMERS) program to provide housing repair assistance to lower wealth families.

DHC has been recognized by the Fannie Mae Foundation’s Maxwell Award and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta’s Partnership Award for the Bungalows complex. The NC Center for Nonprofits recognized DHC with its Stewardship Award for organizations that use exemplary practices worthy of the public’s trust.
