Events – May 17th – 27th

The Butterfly Run in honor of the late Lauren Kimsey—it’s a cancer fundraiser and supports at-risk kids too—is first-thing Saturday. Run hard, run for fun, or walk for a good cause.
Jazz fans, take note: Saturday is the third annual Cornelius Jazz Festival at Smithville Park. The lineup includes Calvin Edwards, Shableek, Bradford Ray Bailey and Shades of Brown. Food trucks like A Worthy Dog, Ruthie’s of Charlotte and Taco Green-Go will be there, too.
Thursday, May 17
This play by Matt Lyle pairs the end of the world with a suburban summer barbecue. May 10-25 at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.
“By Land…By Sea!” is a nature-inspired exhibit by Amy Hart and guest potters. Open through June 8 at the Cornelius Arts Center.
Beyond Walls is Cornelius’s annual, award-winning exhibition. Open through January 31, 2019 at Robbins Park in Cornelius.
Stevie Wonder tribute band Natural Wonder will perform. 5-9 p.m. at LangTree Lake Norman in Mooresville.
Mayor Pro Tem Michael Miltich will lead an open discussion on the budget and other topics. Pizza served. 6 p.m. at Cornelius Town Hall.
Paddlers of all abilities invited to explore the waters of Lake Norman at sunset. Ages 12 and up. 7-8:30 p.m. at Aloha Paddle Sports in Cornelius.
Friday, May 18
Thomas McConnell will lead a presentation about using family war stories as fodder for fiction and guests will enjoy a sommelier-guided wine tasting. 7 p.m. at Main Street Books in Davidson.
Saturday, May 19
Sample strawberry creations, enjoy live music and celebrate Kids to Parks Day. 8 a.m.-noon at the Huntersville Farmers Market.
The Butterfly Run
5K run/walk to celebrate the memory of Lauren Marie Kimsey will begin with the release of 250 live butterflies. Proceeds go to Big Day at the Lake and The Lauren Marie Kimsey Foundation for Synovial Sarcoma. 8-11 a.m. at Aquesta Bank in Cornelius.
Asian Festival
Celebrate Asian cultures, diversity and history with performing arts, food and dragon boat races. Races start at 9 a.m. Festival is 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius.
The Lake Norman Kiwanis Splashville Park in Cornelius will open for the season at 9 a.m. Normal hours of operation are 9-11:30 a.m.1-3:30 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.
Second annual Lake Norman Festival of the Arts with Craft Marketplace will include one hundred local and national artists and craftsmen. Explore fine jewelry, apparel, decor, soaps, live plants, food and more. May 19-20 at Birkdale Village in Huntersville.
Luncheon, beautiful music, hat contest. Please bring a new baby item for donation to the Huntersville Pregnancy Center. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Huntersville United Methodist Church.
Slide Into Summer
Family event with free pontoon boat rides, live entertainment, kids’ activities, food and drinks, raffles. 1-5 p.m. at the WaterStreet Seaport in Cornelius.
Cornelius Jazz Festival
Jazz bands, local artists, food trucks, craft beer and wine, children’s activities. Proceeds benefit the Smithville CommUNITY Coalition and Send-a-Kid-to-Camp. 5-9 p.m. at Smithville Park in Cornelius.

Bring your picnic baskets and blankets and enjoy Spring in the Vineyard with the Lake Norman Orchestra. 6-8 p.m. at Davesté Vineyards in Troutman.

Concert
NC Symphony members Cello Fourum will perform classical and contemporary transcriptions for cello ensemble. 3 p.m. at Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson.

The Moondance Orchestra will perform at 6 p.m. on the Davidson Town Green.
Monday, May 21
Learn bridge or develop playing, bidding and defense skills. Open, stratified games are held 12:30-4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesdays at Cornelius Town Hall.
Quarterly event includes Meet the Raptors presentation and Bird Beak Buffet activity. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Carolina Raptor Center in Huntersville.

Homeschoolers ages 8-12 are invited for a hike focused on terrestrial ecosystems on the edge of Lake Norman. 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the EnergyExplorium in Huntersville.
Group meets monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction. This month’s selection is “Empire Falls” by Richard Russo. 10 a.m. at the Cornelius Branch Library.

Camo Up for Vets run/walk will start at 8 a.m. at Richard’s Coffee Shop and Veterans’ Museum in Mooresville.
Leisurely guided bike ride to explore native, historic and unusual trees in downtown Davidson, along the greenway and in nearby neighborhoods.10 a.m.-noon at the Davidson Town Green.

Learn about the natural history, habitat and behavior of raptors as owls, hawks, vultures and falcons demonstrate their flying abilities. 11 a.m. at the Carolina Raptor Center in Huntersville.
