County to consider no entrance fee at Jetton Park

June 15. It looks like the Cornelius Town Board may finally get its way. The County is poised to consider a resolution at their Tuesday June 20 meeting which would do away with the entrance fees charged at Jetton Park in Cornelius. County Parks Director Jim Garges said a resolution is on the June 20 Board of County Commissioners Meeting agenda “to approve the removal of the fees.”

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Pat Cotham called the fees a “double tax.” She said she will be interested in hearing the discussion June 20, “but my starting point is no fees for Meck residents at a minimum.”

Among the hundreds of parks run by the county, Jetton Park is the only park other than Ramsey Creek Park, also in Cornelius, where an entrance fee is collected. The fees at Jetton have been a sore spot with Cornelius officials for many years. This year, on June 5, Cornelius commissioners  adopted a resolution officially asking Mecklenburg County to eliminate the entrance fees at Jetton Park.

The resolution said “visitation of Jetton Park should be encouraged, as it provides a nearby convenient alternative for Ramsey Creek Park visitors when that park has reached capacity.”
