Jan. 17 UPDATE 5:15 PM. CMS says no school Thursday, the second day in a row school’s out because of weather. Residents in eastern parts of Cornelius report 5-6 inches of snow. Some areas on the west side got 4-5 inches as the snow lingered almost all afternoon.
Either way, roads are expected to be treacherous. The National Weather Service now says it will dip to 15 tonight, not the balmy 17 forecast earlier today. Thursday will be sunny and 39 degrees by afternoon.
The winter storm has had a big impact on Mecklenburg County. While some roads may be clear, others are dangerous.
It is expected to get down to 15 tonight, which means refreezing. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools cancelled all evening events on Thursday as well as athletic activities and Community Use of School events.
Make-up days are Monday, Jan. 22 and Monday, Feb. 19. CMS school principals will notify students and parents of exam and test schedule changes.
Thursday will be a Code C day for CMS staff, and essential staff should report at 10 am.
There will be a 2-hour opening delay tomorrow at Town Hall. Mayor Woody Washam said staff will open up at 10:30.
Driving will be treacherous. Don’t go out unless you have to.
- Approach bridges and overpasses with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on the bridge or overpass.
- Leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles. If traveling, motorists are asked to provide extra distance around service vehicles where snow and ice abatement operations are occurring.
- Reduce your speed. Driving at the regular speed limit will reduce your ability to control the car if you begin to slide.
- If you do begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SLIDE. Do not apply the brakes, as that will cause further loss of control of the car.
Be aware of playing children. - If power goes out, treat intersections with non-working signals as an All-Way STOP condition.
