The ​inaugural ​Butterfly Run 5K run/walk ​​in May​ will benefit Big Day at the Lake and The Lauren Marie Kimsey Foundation for Synovial Sarcoma​. Lauren​ was a popular member of the Lake Norman business community, the marketing director at Aquesta Financial and a long-time Boat Host for Big Day at the Lake, which supports at-risk children in Big Brothers Big Sisters.

​More than 150 runners have signed up.

She passed away last fall after a six-year battle with a rare form of cancer.​ The event, which starts at 8 am May 20, gets under way with ​the ​release of 400 butterflies​ at the official race site, Aquesta Bank on Jetton Road, a block from West Catawba. Registration for the Butterfly Run 5K ​is​ $25​. ​To register, visit runsignup.com/Race/NC/Cornelius/ButterflyRun5k.​ Registration includes goody bags and t-shirts for the first 200 who sign up.​
