Speed limit reduced on Jetton

Feb. 8. New signs for a 35 mph speed limit between Peninsula Shores Drive and West Catawba Avenue will go up on Jetton Road as early as next week. The road, which is enjoyed by cyclists and walkers almost as much as motorists, has been marred by frequent left-turn accidents, especially between Charlestowne Lane and West Catawba.

Police Chief Bence Hoyle suggested Town Commissioners reduce the speed limit on Jetton Road to 35 mph for it entire length. The four-lane residential road was taken over by the Town of Cornelius last year.

“Widely respected by all board members, the Chief’s case was persuasive enough to tip the board toward making this long debated move,” said Commissioner Jim Duke, a Peninsula resident.

“My feeling is that the simplest approach is likely the best approach. Slowing traffic down dovetails nicely when it comes to safety and the direction the Town is taking to bring more biking, jogging, and walking to our town residents,” he said.

Jetton Road’s speed limits are currently 45 mph from West Catawba to Peninsula Shores Drive, lowering to 35 near the main entrance to The Peninsula Club and beyond.

As a resident off of Jetton Road since 1972, I am not very happy with the 35 mile per hour change beyond Jetton Cove. This town has basically turned the roads over to the bicyclist and walkers. The heck with the car traffic! There are miles of sidewalks and trails at taxpayer expense for walkers and now we are expected to give up the roads for bikers safety. This is asking too much of our road system and car traffic. Very bad move.
