.The Omega Iota Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will hold a special “Mental Health First Aid” training session April 7 at Cornelius Town Hall. The event, which runs from 8 am to 5 pm on a Saturday, comes in the wake of gun violence around the country.

“Every new incidence of gun violence sparks the debate about what should be done. Despite differences of opinion, individuals want to do something,” said Ava Callender, one of the organizers. “Mental Health First Aid Training is a step that we can all take. A person you know could be experiencing a mental health or substance use problem. You are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack.”

Training will be provided by Carolinas Healthcare System for adults 18 years and older. The all-day session includes a manual, snacks and lunch at no charge.
