Community meeting set for new commercial project on W. Catawba

Proposed commercial project on W. Catawba

July 2. A community meeting about a proposed retail project on West Catawba Avenue will take place Wednesday July 10, beginning at 6 pm in Cornelius Town Hall.

The proposed multi-tenant project would have restaurants on each end, plus medical/offices between the two eateries, as well as another building of approximately 6,700 square feet behind the restaurant structure, for a total of 14,000 square feet.

The 4.35 acre site is the former First Community Bank property east of Chick-fil-A.

An initial review of the project was completed in May by the town’s Pre-development Review Committee.

“The feedback at the PDRC meeting was positive with access and connectivity with adjacent properties being an active topic discussed,” said Planning Director Rox Burhans.

The next step after the community meeting will be an informal presentation at the Monday July 15 Town Board Meeting, which will begin at 6 pm. No decision will be made that evening.

  1. I’m sorry but this is ridiculous!!! Catawba has too much traffic now!! People are refusing to buy in Cornelius because the congestion and gridlock are unreal!
Can we not fix our infrastructure before any additional construction?

    • So wrong. This is outdated thinking, and your generation needs to leave. Cornelius is becoming modern. Bring new restaurants, new retail, build more. I’m from California originally and this town needs to be more modern like the cities I came from. Why wouldn’t you want more cool dining options in your town? Such a weird way of thinking.

      • Please go back to California.
Your way of thinking is what made California the worst state in the country, next to NY.

        • Such great Southern hospitality here isnt it? Because you disagree with someone, suddenly you tell them to leave and go back. You must be a leftist.

        • Also, bringing in more small businesses with dining and retail is not what made California the worst state. Bad governance and high taxes did. This boosts the economy. There are a lot of trees in North Carolina. Go take a day trip 5 miles away and you’ll get your trees. Welcome to the new world baby!

    • Agree.

      Totally.

  2. This is good news. Abandoned buildings like the former First Citizen’s Bank are an eyesore. Medical offices will be needed as the new hospital is completed. This all makes sense.

    • Responsible development is not a terrible thing, but it should be well planned and balanced. Filling in every little corner with parking and commercial businesses without considering how people will navigate and use it is irresponsible. Good urban design has green spaces, destinations and connections, among other things. Developers want to make money and they don’t care how it affects those of us who live here. It’s the job of the town to make good rules and decisions that serve the people who live here. I look around at all the trees coming down around Cornelius and wonder who’s really benefitting.

  3. Yes! Make Cornelius like California, with congestion and gridlock and high taxes and exiting for all! Bring in more new people, who know everything, until you run out the old! Make life uncomfortable and tedious and crowded for all!

    • Deal with it, change is inevitable. So happy driving through all the new developments now knowing that somewhere, you bunch of people losing it over your trees haha. Gonna be a fun summer!
