August: A last month of summer before school starts

Thursday, Aug. 1

Jazz, Soul & R&B Live!

6 pm | Aug. 1. A community celebration with live jazz, soul and R&B. Bring a friend and your dancing shoes. Free. David B. Waymer Recreation Center, 14008 Holbrooks Rd., Huntersville.

Friday, Aug. 2

Food Truck Fridays

11:30 am-1 pm | Aug 2. Nubia Food Truck for Mediterranean. Bring your friends, family, and co-workers and enjoy lunch. The picnic tables will be available for seating. Cain Park, 21336 Catawba Ave.

Taylor Nation — Taylor Swift Tribute

8 pm | Aug. 2. From the country-infused melodies of Taylor’s early albums to the chart-topping pop hits that followed. Must be 21 years old to attend. $20 in advance. $25 at the door. BoatYard Lake Norman, 18418 Statesville Rd., Cornelius.

Rock the Park

6 pm food trucks; 6:30 pm show | Aug. 2. Radio Revolver. The amphitheater has open lawn seating. Bring a chair, blanket and rock the park. Free. Liberty Park, 255 E. Iredell Ave., Downtown Mooresville.

Live Under The Oaks

6-8 pm | Aug. 2. Unwind with live musical performance. No coolers are allowed on property. A bar will be onsite in the designated area provided by Red Rocks for beverage needs. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. Seating space may be limited. The Plaza, Birkdale Village, Huntersville.

Saturday, Aug. 3

Cornelius Brick Race

10-11:30 am | Aug. 3. Kid racers will construct their own toy brick car, then race one another in multiple heats until a champion is crowned. Additional awards will be given for best design and most unique design. Event is free, but registration is required. For ages 7-14. Cain Park, downtown Cornelius.

Intro to Flat Water Kayaking

9:30-11 am; arrive no later than 9:15 am so that class can start on time | Aug. 3. This class is designed for paddlers who have little to no experience kayaking on calm water. Participants will spend 20-30 minutes in the classroom with the rest of the time on the water. All sessions will be lead with experienced and qualified instructors. Must register. Cost per person: $30 for residents, $36 others. Lake Norman Community Sailing Center, 15901 NC-73, located within Blythe Landing Park, Cornelius.

Mooresville Festival of Food Truck

2024 Concerts @ the Circles

Public concert

3 pm | Aug. 3. The Carolina Youth Orchestra Summer Festival will culminate in a public concert held at  Duke Family Performance Hall, Davidson College.

National Night Out

5:30-7:30 pm | Aug. 6. Cornelius Parks & Recreation joins the Cornelius Police Department in hosting our annual National Night Out event. ‘Footloose’

Miss May’s Destination Tea

2-4 pm | Aug. 11. Be part of a lovely tea celebrating Miss May Davidson, , benefactress of the Rural Hill Cultural Center. Light hors d’oeuvres, along with teas, and lemonade will be the fare of the day. The theme of this year’s tea is “A Destination” and will celebrate countries, cities, and events that bring joy when you travel. Dress in your afternoon tea finery (hats are encouraged, gloves are optional).  $40 per person until Aug. 4; $18 per well-behaved and supervised child until Aug. 3. Stand-Up for Good Comedy Night

7 pm doors 8 pm show | Aug. 17. A fun night of laughs and help prevent child abuse in our community! Comedians Michelle Miller McNair and Jordan Centry will keep you entertained. Proceeds benefit Pharos Parenting to fund child abuse prevention programs and positive parenting education in North Mecklenburg. $25 – VIP $100. Cain Center for the Arts.

9 am – 6 pm | Aug. 17. A festival at the stepping stones of Loch Norman with music, food, workshops, photo ops and shopping. Immerse yourself into the spirit of the Outlander TV series. Early bird VIP and general admission $80 and $40 through May 28, then $55 and $95. Children must have a ticket but are free age 17 and younger because of  the viewer rating of the show (TV-MA).
