Vienne scores game-winning goal for Wildcats
Ellis Vienne, who played soccer at Hopewell High School, scored the game-winning goal at the University of Kentucky's opening soccer match. He is the son of Michael and Loraine Ellis Vienne, who live on Booth Bay Court.
Davidson College Presbyterian Church will sponsor a blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross 2-7 p.m. Mon., Sept. 13. The drive will take place in the church’s Congregation House, 218 Concord Rd., Davidson. Donors are asked to help “Go for the Goal” of 58 pints donated. In the spirit of the football season, donors are invited to dress in their favorite team’s colors. Refreshments will be served. Jim Beauchamp of Cornelius attended the annual luau at the Senior Center on West Catawba Ave. Duck Pond contestants won prizes ranging from coffee cups and koozies to vases and calculators.
Our Towns Habitat for Humanity ReStore team signed a lease for the former Staples location on highway 150, behind Wendy’s and in front of Wal-Mart. This location will be the second ReStore location in the Lake Norman area. The Cornelius location will also remain open for business.
A farmer's market will be held 5-8 p.m. every Friday through October at the gazebo in Jetton Village. There will be produce stands, baked goods with jams and honey, jewelry, herbs and plants, flower bouquets, organic beef, cheeses and seafood.
Don Miguel Ruiz book's – "The Four Agreements" – was first published in 1997. In this issue of Silver Threads, I will share the First Agreement with you that is outlined in his book. As you know, I have written a little book called “QAC – The Smallest Personal Strategy Book You’ll Ever Need.” It is a common sense approach for listening to the many questions we find are swirling about in our thoughts at any given moment and awakening to the power we hold within to choose anything and everything in our lives. It is the common sense aspect that is most important. The Four Agreements is also written with great common sense.

CYO is currently registering youths for their Fall 2010 Music Programs! These exciting Music Programs will enhance your youth's musical education with challenging compositions in a full orchestra setting. CYO is currently accepting new youth musicians from 1st - 12th grade. Does your child play a string, brass, woodwind, piano or percussion instrument? Have they just started to play an instrument and want to perform with a group? Are they interested in learning to play an instrument? Do they enjoy performing at public events? If so, Cornelius Youth Orchestras are your answer, with four programs available to challenge your youth musician. All rehearsals are held at Bailey Road Recreation Center (Bailey Middle School), 11900 Bailey Road, Cornelius.
The Cornelius Youth Orchestra is available to youth musicians with three or more years of music instruction and is intended for those musicians that can perform moderate to concert level musical compositions. This program includes 30 minutes of sectional instruction from qualified music instructors, 90 minutes of group orchestra rehearsal and the opportunity for public performances. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 6:30 - 8:30pm.
The Cornelius Cadet Orchestra is available for youth musicians with one to three years of music instruction and is intended as a beginning orchestra program. This program is 75 minutes of orchestra instruction and the opportunity for performance in a group setting. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 6:30pm - 7:45 p.m.
CYO Beginners Group offers musical instruction taught by qualified music instructors. This program is open to youth with little or no instrumental instruction. Is your youth interested in playing an instrument, but doesn't know which one? We can help introduce your youth to the various instruments so they can select the one that is right for them. This program offers 75 minutes of group instruction and the opportunity for performance in a group setting. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 6:30pm - 7:45 p.m.
New this season: CYO Jazz Ensemble! Our Director William "Bill" Haradenwill be instructing the Jazz Ensemble program. This program is offered to youth musicians with three or more years of music instruction, with or without prior jazz experience. The program is 45 minutes of jazz musical instruction and the opportunity for performance in a group setting. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 6-6:45 p.m., which will enable youth musicians to participate in both Jazz and Youth Orchestra.
Cornelius Youth Orchestras (CYO) is a non-profit musical organization dedicated to providing cultural enrichment, musical instruction and unique performance opportunities for local youth through a specialized orchestral program. Currently under the direction of Bill Haraden, the CYO offers multiple levels of group instrumental instruction for beginning to advanced youth musicians, performing community events on a regular basis each year.

NFL-Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick contest
The 2010 NFL-Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick Local Competition will take place Sat., Sept., 4 at Smithville Park, 19710 S. Ferry St., with a 9 a.m. competition start time. The event is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 15. Local winners will have the opportunity to compete at a Sectional Championship in October and possibly advance to the Team Championships at a Carolina Panthers game in November. Registration is free and will be accepted on-site the day of the competition starting at 8:30 a.m. A photocopy of each contestant's birth certificate is required at the time of registration.
